Candaba Swamp

In times where several bird species are becoming extinct, it will be quite relieving to witness a number of birds of different kinds flying overhead or resting on branches and grassfields. A perfect site where you can bird watch is at the Candaba Swamp in Pampanga.

The area is a complex of freshwater ponds, swamps and marshes with surrounding areas of seasonally flooded grassland, arable land and palm savanna on a vast alluvial flood plain. The entire area is usually flooded in the wet season, but most of it dries out during the dry season (late November to April). The impoundment is used as a fish pond during the rainy season, and then drained in January or February to be used for agriculture. Candaba Swamp acts as a natural flood retention basin holding wet season overflow from the Maasim, San Miguel, Garlang, Bulu and Peñaranda Rivers, and draining into the Pampanga River.

The swamp has been declared a bird sanctuary and the municipal government, under Mayor Jerry Pelayo with the support of the national government and private organizations, is undertaking measures to rehabilitate and conserve the swamp and its diverse wildlife for the future generations. Hunting has been banned and shift of land use is being strictly regulated.

During the bird watching season, when birds are migrating in the area sometime during the first quarter of the year, enthusiasts troop to the place to simply admire them. When we went to the area, there were no people in the swamp except for lone farmers who were minding the fields. The group of birds with their chirping sounds was a sight to behold with Mt. Arayat at the background adding majesty to the awesome view.

Anvaya Cove Beach & Nature Club

Located at Morong, Bataan, the Anvaya Cove Beach & Nature Club is for the exclusive use of its members that they can extend to their families. It has a Tropical-Asian theme with the natural backdrop of the mountains and with the ocean at the other side. They have the beach to boast off and at the same time they also have a lagoon. Both offer recreational activities for the members. They have an eco trail, ziplines, rope course and camping grounds for the adventurous. There is a cafe, a spa area, cottages and rooms where you can check in.

In a cloudy friday morning of July, we have our hopes for a sunny afternoon to take a dip into the ocean, as we travel from Manila to Bataan. On our way to the Club, we are all too happy to pass by the picturesque mountainous and forested area of Subic. What a view to behold.... via the new SCTEX, we are able to drive thru the place smoothly.
When we arrive, we are delighted to ride a golf cart from the clubhouse to our room at a far end of the club. The carts will take us to where we want to go-- we just have to call. Bamboo, trees and other plants nestle beside the rooms and the suites giving the place a natural peaceful ambience. The ocean is shallow so we are able to linger in the water for quite sometime. There is also a pool you can enjoy, a lookout tower where you ogle out into the ocean and a bar for partygoers. The place offers all the comforts of a vacation you can think of. Thankfully, we know someone who is a club member =)

A Quick Travel Guide To Rome

Rome is an enchanting place that has been attracting tourists for its rich cultural heritage and brilliant historic monuments. In the ratings of Conde Nast Traveler's 2004 Reader's Choice Awards, Rome grabbed the coveted second spot on the list of top ten European cities.

Some quick helpful facts about traveling to the city. You need to have a valid passport to enter Italy though you do not need a visa if the duration of the stay is less than 90 days. However, there is an exception to this rule for some specific countries. Since the summers are hot and dry, you should visit Rome between October and March. Book yourself at a hotel that is close to the historic district. The ideal place would be Hotel de Russie, situated between the Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps that are worth seeing.

Plan your itinerary well in advance, especially the places you definitely want to visit. The ideal mode of discovering Rome's heritage is on foot, as it gives you the flexibility of covering the locations at your own speed. The other option to save cost is to use the Tram Bus system that links the entire city and also the nearby areas. And if you are looking at convenience, you can always opt for a private tour. Make sure you have taken a pair of comfortable shoes. Carry minimum weight while going around the city. The city has many eating joints around the tourist attractions so you can appease your hunger pangs any time you want.

The city is full of tourist attractions and it is a real tough task to decide which of them are a must see. Your local sightseeing plan for a given day could look like this. Start with the Coliseum that is a popular tourist attraction. Since the visiting hours change through the year, make sure that you confirm the timings beforehand. To make this awesome experience more realistic, they have an hourly conducted tour by guides in the guise of gladiators. The next important stop, the Roman Forum or Foro Romano, is just across the street. The Roman Forum, the heart of the Roman Empire, is standing tall even after 2000 years! You would be fascinated by the involutions of the Roman architecture. There is no entry fee here and you can also avail the facility of guided tours.

The next stop, The Pantheon or 'The Temple to all Gods', was built around 125 AD and is one of the best-preserved buildings in Rome. Built by Emperor Hadrian, many famous personalities like Vittorio Emmanuel II and Umberto I (the kings of Italy) and the one and only Raphael are buried here. There is a nine meter opening in the concrete dome which the only source of light in this monument. It takes you back in time to the glorious days of the Roman Empire and you cannot stop imagining being a part of the Romans, as it existed then. You would get goose bumps dreaming of the kind of clothes they would have worn, their language, gestures etc. You can have this extraordinary experience through the year except Christmas when the Pantheon is closed.

By the end of the day, there is just one more place to see that cannot be missed. You can easily spend three hours visiting The Vatican and its collection of artifacts that chronicle the Catholic Church's history. If you have time, you should let Michelangelo's Pieta, which is housed in St Peter's Basilica, amaze you. The Vatican museum has even more splendid antiques, including the Egyptian mummies. You should not miss Sistine Chapel that has The Bible painted on the ceiling by the legendary Michelangelo himself.

Well, whatever you chose to do, get to befriend your hotel concierge first since he can be the best source of updated information.

Tirol n Tirol

Located in Station 2, Boracay, Tirol n Tirol is a beach resort which offers Balinese style cottages in its beachfront with a lush garden at the middle. These cottages are made of native bamboo and nipa materials. Most cottages, beachfront and non-beachfront are fully air-conditioned. Each room has cable TV, hot and cold showers and high speed internet access. It has an in-house restaurant, tennis courts and can arrange banca rentals for island-hopping activities.

I have visited Boracay only twice and we have checked in at Tirol n Tirol for both of these trips. The atmosphere that the look of the resort brings to its visitors magnifies the wonderful beach adventures you have.

Boracay

As one of the world known prestigious beaches, Boracay Island of Aklan comes to mind of beach enthusiasts. Unlike other white sand beaches, the island offers a fine talcum powder-like sand. Its clear sapphire seas are tranquil and ideal for swimming and other water activities like sailing, jet skiing, paragliding, banana boating, snorkeling, fishing, among others. Several events like concerts, sports tournaments and promotional activities, are scheduled throughout the year, especially in the summer when people troop to the beaches to cool off.

Boracay is a 7-kilometer island where only 1 kilometer across at its narrowest point, is its stretch of white sand that can be seen in several beaches. The most famous is the White Beach. Other beaches are Yadac, Manoc-Manoc, Bulabog, Diniwid and Puka Shell.

Boracay Resorts range from the most prestigious to the most commonly. Accommodation prices also vary on whether you choose to stay at the beachfront or meters away from the beach.

Boracay beach is divided into 3 stations. Along the beachwalk, your eyes can already feast on souvenirs like clothing, accessories, household wares and knick-knacks, among others. Located at Station 1 is the D’ Mall, a popular destination for shopping. At station 2, there is a market where you can buy Aklan delicacies and fresh seafoods. Nearby, there is also a string of stalls where you can choose a novelty of souvenirs.

Several restaurants, cafes and bars will entice your taste buds and your cravings whether for a laidback meal or for social drinking. You can party at bars which offer live bands through the wee hours of the night up to the break of dawn.

Tattooing is also famous in the island. But people mostly get a henna tattoo just to satisfy a temporary whim.
Just at the back of all those resorts, are residences and small establishments which are growing in number since Boracay prohibits the bancas from docking right on the island’s shore. People must now alight from the pier and take a tricycle or their hotel service that would take them for a ride at the streets behind the beach resorts.

Other attractions are the Rock along White Beach, the Bat Caves, Crocodile Island, hidden coves like that in Crystal Cove. Commission a boat ride that would take you to these places and then go snorkeling, too.

There are no direct trips to the island. You have to book a flight to Kalibo, Aklan, then take a van or bus for a 1 and ½ hour drive to Caticlan, where you board a motorized banca for a 30 minute ride to the island. You may also opt to travel by ship from Manila to Caticlan.

Club Balai Isabel

It even boasts of the fresh catch of sardinella tawilis which is abundant in Taal Lake and which it serves crispy or grilled at its clubhouse.

The week-long celebration of the Ibalong Festival in Albay, Legaspi is held every 2nd week of October. The festivities depict the historical evolution of Bicol from a rich land called Ibalong. This is highlighted by a colorful parade with people donning masks and costumes to look like the heroes and villains of their epic Ibalong (This is the story of the beginning of Bicol). They dance, sing and play music. They hold procession in beautifully prepared floats. Through their presentations, the locals relive the classic battles and heroic adventures of their mythical heroes namely, Baltog, Handyong and Bantong against foes and wild beasts.

In 2005, the festival was held from October 25 - 31. It was rainy on the day of the culmination of the festivities. However, the weather did not dampen the spirit of the revelers. It was even broadcasted in the local media so people who cannot join the celebration in the streets just stayed glued to their TV sets. They even waited until the winners of the competition were announced.

Greenbelt

Through the years, Greenbelt in Makati has developed into something more than a shopping haven for the public. It has now provided a more elitist atmosphere which seems to only suit the fancies of the upper class. Branded stores line up its malls. Bars and restaurants offer the best ambience and the finest cuisine. However, everybody is free to visit the place. And, certainly everybody will appreciate the magnificent architecture of its buildings and the splendid landscaping of its gardens. There is even a pond where ducks paddle playfully.... The Geenbelt Chapel still stands there, a familiar structure in a seemingly new place.
